4 Quick Tips to Make Life Easier for Metal Roofers
Hey there roofer,
Are you a fan of quick, practical tips that instantly boost the quality and efficiency of your work? Of course you are—just like every other metal roofer out there! Here are four tips you can start using right now:
1. Staying Warm
Depending on where you are in the world, it might be really cold out. The best way to avoid freezing isn’t just piling on layer after layer—it’s about moisture control and wind protection.
- If your boots have holes, seal them up or replace them to keep your feet dry.
- Overheating can make you sweat, which then makes you even colder. A heated jacket might sound great, but if it causes you to sweat, it can actually leave you feeling chilled.
- Invest in a jacket that breaks the wind; cutting down wind chill can make a huge difference.
2. Working on Steeper Pitches
When working on steep roofs, consider using a rock climbing harness (under your tool belt) instead of—or in addition to—your standard five-point harness. It’s often more comfortable and less bulky. Always follow safety guidelines and use at your discretion.
3. Standing Seam Clamps
Accessing areas that already have standing seam can be tough—especially if you’re doing repairs or if the siding crew needs to install something like the side cheek of a dormer.
- Top-of-the-line seam clamps can be expensive. For smaller jobs, a budget-friendly clamp will do the trick. I’m a bigger guy, and these clamps have held up just fine for me.

4. Measuring Triangles (Valleys & Hips)
Instead of ordering multiple panel sizes that keep getting smaller, use the square-footage method:
- Measure the length of the longest panel you need (plus 2 feet for good measure).
- Calculate the total square footage of the valley or hip area.
- Determine how many square feet one of your longest panels covers.
- Divide the total roof area by that panel coverage.
This gives your manufacturer a simpler list to run and pack, saving you time and frustration.
I hope these tips help you stay warm, work comfortably on steeps, handle standing seam clamps efficiently, and measure those tricky triangles with ease.
