Could there Be Virtual Apprenticeships in the Future?
Can We Really Teach Roofing Online?
Fellow Sheet Met'ler,
Ever thought about learning roofing on your computer? Sounds odd, right?
We’re used to working with our hands. And with the availability of credible trainers basically non-existent, some folks are forced to find new ways to teach and learn.
First off, what is a “virtual apprentice” anyway?
What’s a “Virtual” Apprenticeship?
-
You can learn skills from a pro—even if they’re not local.
-
You can pause and rewind videos, join live calls, have access to a community who's doing the same thing.
-
You still practice hands-on stuff, but would likely have to submit your final project for approval to move to the next level.
Why It Might Be Cool
-
Learn from Anywhere: No long drives to a classroom or job site.
-
Save Money: Less cash spent on travel or extra gear.
-
Flexible Times: If you can’t be there in person during the day, maybe you can jump online at night.
But There Are Some Hiccups
-
It’s hard to replace real, hands-on work with just a screen.
-
You need good internet. If your Wi-Fi is spotty, that’s a problem.
-
Sometimes, it’s nice to have a mentor right there, helping you on the spot. This type of learning ain't for everyone.
Are People Really Doing It?
-
Yep! Some trades, like welding, use special computer simulators.
-
Roofing might be next. You could watch a live video of someone bending metal, complete a project, then head to your nearest approved shop or crew and get them to give you a passing grade.
So, Does It Work?
-
Yes! I have had student switch a tonne of success.
-
Their experience they shared with me was really positive and now prefer this over trying to line up in-person training
Your Turn
-
What do you think? Can roofing lessons happen on a laptop?
-
If you’re curious, let me know. Reach out anytime with questions you may have.
Cheers to trying new things! Even if we can’t replace all in-person work, a little online help might make learning faster and easier. Let’s keep growing and see where this takes us.
